Can't make it to our lobby day in Springfield on May 9? Here are three quick actions you can take from anywhere to support better public ed policy in Illinois!
1) There is a Senate Education Committee hearing for our class size bill on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00pm. File a witness slip as a PROPONENT of HB5481. The witness slip is here. If you are new to witness slips, here is a how-to blog post with instructions on filling out witness slips
Share this on Facebook & Twitter with your contacts who care about class size. You can find our fact sheet on this bill here.
UPDATE: HB5421- Class Size Goals- passed out of the Senate Education Committee today! Thank you to everyone who filed a witness slip! 669 filed as proponents and 11 filed as opponents (2 no positions.)
2) We're still negotiating a Student Information Transparency Act. Send a letter to your IL rep & senator about why we need this bill.
You can also read about the comprehensive legislation needed to protect school students' personal data here and you can read about how all of the above relates to Mark Zuckerberg's $14M "gift" to CPS here.
3) Make a call and ask your IL state senator to sign on as a sponsor to HB5721, the CPS facilities bill, and SB2236, the fund-schools-before-vouchers bill. Look up your legislator here.
Read about both of those bills here: Raise Your Hand Action's Legislative Agenda.
Taking the above actions will support the efforts of the 12 parents heading to Springfield on Wednesday! Parents will be in teams speaking to various IL State Senators. RYH Action will be attending (and possibly testifying at) the IL Senate Education Committee hearing on Tuesday at 2:00, speaking at a subject matter hearing on IL student assessment on Wednesday morning, and participating in a negotiation meeting on a student data privacy bill Wednesday afternoon. Please support all these efforts with the above three actions!
You can find all of the above actions as a Facebook event here. Please click that you are "Going" to this event to receive reminders of all of the above actions and so that you can share with your friends! Thank you. And follow us on Twitter (Wednesday and always!) to get updates of our efforts.
